We currently have several bloodlines including birds from Europe, southern Ontario and Newfoundland.
As of 2021 season these no longer require a permit to keep in Canada.
Like their cousins the Hooded Merganser, Smew nest in Wood Duck type nest boxes, with a three inch hole being preferred. Like all Sea Ducks they get their adult plumage in their second fall. Being a Merganser, Smew are fish eaters and require a diet with higher protein.
